The phantom double play
Posted by: Anonymous on April 30, 2007 at 3:52PM EST
When the play is close at first, does the second base ump look more closely at the second base out? Or is that just always assumed, that the guy forced at second is out?

I think if it's close, the defense always gets the call. In other words, in the average double play, the tie DOES NOT go to the runner. On the other hand, the throw better beat the runner at first base, or the tie WILL go to the runner charging hard across the bag.

No the second base ump does not because he even lets the second baseman or SS miss the bag and still get the call. It just needs to look good.
